Confession: When I first saw Wonder Women in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, I wasn’t sure I’d be interested in a full light film dedicated to her story. But after reading a good 20 Facebook status reviews and hearing entertainment outlets buzz about the newest DC Comics film, I decided to wrap my weekend with a date with Wonder Woman. Needless to say, it was one of the best choices I’d made all week.
Beauty and badassery take superhuman form in Gal Gadot, whose depiction of the comic book company’s grande dame was nothing short of superb.
Gadot shines as Diana, Princess of Themyscira, Daughter of Hippolyta — the powerful Amazon woman dedicated to doing her part to help end World War I and killing Ares, the Greek god of war. A perfect blend of action and humor with top notch special effects, I left the theater possibly more affected by the film’s statements on feminism, humanity, and the strength and power of the women around us that goes well beyond good looks and fashion sense. I smile now just thinking about the Wonder Women I hold dear and how even their little acts of badassery make my world a better place.
Wonder Woman is just what this pre-summer movie slump (sorry, Baywatch) needed. After being presently surprised, I’m more amped than ever to check out Justice League when it opens this fall.
