I Can Buy Myself Flowers…

May 14, 2024October 13, 2024

After years of buying them for friends, family, and even complete strangers, I finally bought myself flowers. A small bouquet totaling just a little more than $4, but the price wasn’t important. What is important is the gesture — the almost radical act of gifting myself something beautiful and mood-boosting that isn’t a size 13.

After trimming and carefully placing them in my makeshift vase, I have to say I get why people enjoy receiving their flowers while they can still smell them. Each time I walk by them, I find myself admiring the vibrancy of the petals, the elegant strength of the stems. How their presence gets me to slow down for a second as I pass and how they really add a special something to my space.

I won’t say I’m ready to be a plant dad, and I have absolutely no plans of starting a garden anytime soon, but I’ll definitely keep flowers on my grocery list for now.

Patience: The Learned Virtue

August 31, 2017October 13, 2024

When I first moved to what I refer to as the Upper South, I asked God for patience to help me cope with and conquer life outside of the Sunshine State. What I got was not only the line at the bank author Tracy McMillan talks about, but lines (complete with screaming children) at the grocery store, businesses with roughly estimated hours of operation, innumerable “You’re not from here?” stares and remarks, and a consistent reminder that patience — for me, at least — is a learned virtue.
