I returned to the grid following a long road trip to find most of my social media followers up in arms — but not over the latest political developments in Washington. This unrest was fashion-focused, courtesy of The RompHim.
Sifting through social media posts and timeline conversations only made me more confused, considering The RompHim resembles jumpsuits and similar pieces offered this time of year by retailers like ASOS, just with a few style and design differences.
As the week powered on, so did discussions of “male rompers” and their ties to masculinity, self-expression, ancient history, political distraction, identity, and even body consciousness. In short, it was romper madness.
My take? I don’t mind the idea of a jumpsuit or one-piece look. In fact, I appreciate the utility, convenience, and ease that comes with making such a choice. What I wear typically makes no statement about my masculinity, my politics, my beliefs, or my biases — if I like it and it fits well, I wear it.
To those of you who inspired chuckles and laughs with your phone calls, DMs, and texts offering votes of confidence in my ability to rep #TeamRomper or #TeamRomphim these warmer days ahead, I can assure you that the RompHim won’t be my choice.
However, after seeing some of the alternatives, who knows what the summer will bring?
