#WCW: SZA

May 24, 2017June 17, 2017

“You have to be authentic, otherwise you’re jamming the flow of the universe with a monkey wrench by creating resistance and uncertainty. Do what you feel, and even if you’re not sure just do it anyway. But do it like you give a f**k.” – SZA

Just when I thought I couldn’t fall more in love with SZA, NYLON had to go and feature her last month in the mag’s beauty issue. In the feature, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter drew me in further with mentions of insight from Erykah Badu, getting her props from Beyoncé, and how black soap and hemp oil attribute to her effortlessly beautiful look.

To top it off, she speaks at length about her authenticity — something that not only endears fans to her, but also plays a huge role in how she creates AND in how she sees and lives life. If there’s one thing I can say about authenticity, it’s that it’s SEXY…and that SZA’s got sex appeal. Can’t wait to hear her upcoming full-length CTRL project.

Patience: The Learned Virtue

August 31, 2017October 13, 2024

When I first moved to what I refer to as the Upper South, I asked God for patience to help me cope with and conquer life outside of the Sunshine State. What I got was not only the line at the bank author Tracy McMillan talks about, but lines (complete with screaming children) at the grocery store, businesses with roughly estimated hours of operation, innumerable “You’re not from here?” stares and remarks, and a consistent reminder that patience — for me, at least — is a learned virtue.
