A very delicious cheeseburger

Cheeseburger in Paradise

For my cheeseburger in paradise
Makin’ the best of every virtue and vice
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice
To get a cheeseburger in paradise

Jimmy Buffett, Cheeseburger in Paradise

For the longest, the phrase “comfort food” for me was synonymous with my great grandmother’s chili, my mother’s lasagna, or my aunt’s chicken noodle soup. Nowadays, nothing seems to hit the spot and warm my soul like a great cheeseburger.

I’m not talking your fast food, overpriced drive-thru deluxe. I’m talking about succulent quality beef cooked to perfection, real melty cheese, fresh lettuce and tomato, and just a little ketchup — maybe some bacon and a hit of barbecue sauce for a little razzle dazzle. Is your mouth watering yet, or am I the only one about to open the Door Dash app?

Pair this with some fresh straight cut or steak fries? All I need afterwards is a good nap.

Patience: The Learned Virtue

August 31, 2017October 13, 2024

When I first moved to what I refer to as the Upper South, I asked God for patience to help me cope with and conquer life outside of the Sunshine State. What I got was not only the line at the bank author Tracy McMillan talks about, but lines (complete with screaming children) at the grocery store, businesses with roughly estimated hours of operation, innumerable “You’re not from here?” stares and remarks, and a consistent reminder that patience — for me, at least — is a learned virtue.
