Sidi-bae: A Love Story

May 11, 2017September 4, 2017

I never planned on falling in love with Gabourey Sidibe. Quite honestly, it kinda just happened over time. Something about the Precious actress just stuck with me and I’m so glad it did.

Following the success of the 2009 film and her rise to fame, I kept up with Sidibe’s dauntless personality through features and profiles (like the memorable “The Audacity of ‘Precious’“) that offered a glimpse into the life of a woman who’s so much like me and the folks I hold dear.

Nearly 10 years later, Sidibe’s showing no signs of slowing down — maintaining her role as Becky on Fox’s Empire and releasing her memoir This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare to great reviews. Last month, I read (and reread) her feature in NYLON’s beauty issue where she spoke candidly about her weight loss, her flaws, and her journey to self-acceptance.

At a time when so many of us are depending on filters, makeup, and the perfect outfit to help us cope with our flaws and shortcomings, it’s refreshing to see Gabby Sidibe genuinely encompass and embody feminism, body positivity, resilience, and joy on the daily.

What celebrity or celebrities have you fallen in love with over the years? What qualities have you smitten?

Despite its modern-day connotation and denotation, vulnerability keeps us taking risks, meeting new people, staying humble, and chasing our goals and dreams. Simply put, I’ve learned that we can’t truly have lived a substantive life without it.

Patience: The Learned Virtue

August 31, 2017October 13, 2024

When I first moved to what I refer to as the Upper South, I asked God for patience to help me cope with and conquer life outside of the Sunshine State. What I got was not only the line at the bank author Tracy McMillan talks about, but lines (complete with screaming children) at the grocery store, businesses with roughly estimated hours of operation, innumerable “You’re not from here?” stares and remarks, and a consistent reminder that patience — for me, at least — is a learned virtue.
