Whether you consider it a commitment-phobe’s anthem or one of the great genre-blending jams of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, there’s an undeniable magic about Jane Child’s “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love”. Released in 1990, the track pairs Child’s fervid R&B-adjacent vocals with a synth sound that’s distinctly all her own.
Considering how music has evolved in recent years, I’m honestly surprised that no rapper or producer has sampled the track for a mainstream hit (think West Coast rapper Mann’s sample of Nu Shooz’s “I Can’t Wait” for his 2010 single “Buzzin”).
Regardless of whether it’s reinvented in the near future or not, I’ll continue to turn the volume up and sing along every time this song comes on. Despite its age, it’s always worth the rewind.
